INFRARED

Infrared patching is a process of reheating a deteriorated section of asphalt and blending in new hot mix asphalt to create a seamless asphalt patch. Unlike a saw cut and remove patch there is no crack or seam and no cold joint for water to enter.

Infrared Patching Process
  • The work areas cleaned of loose stone dirt and debris. Infrared heater is placed over the damaged asphalt and heated for approximately 8-10 minutes. The asphalt is then softened and then the heater is removed.
  • Next, a lute or rake is used to define the edges of the patch and then the rake is used to scarify the inside of the patch.
  • New hot mix asphalt is then added to the repair to bring it up to the proper grade and then it is leveled with asphalt lute.
  • Next the asphalt is compacted with power roller or plate compactor.

Note: Infrared patching has its limitations. Infrared will not be a permanent fix if you have sub base problems.
